When I talk about this project around me, one of the first questions I often get is: “Why do you create clothes for 5'3 tall women? It’s very precise! “
And yes, it is precise and I didn’t choose this number randomly!

UNDER 5'3, YOU ARE CONSIDERED AS PETITE FOR THE FASHION INDUSTRY

In general, clothing prototypes and patterns are designed for women measuring 5'5. Statistically speaking, when you make a garment for a 5'5 tall woman, there is a good chance that the garment will look good on most women.

However, a person measuring less than 5'3 have different measurements:

  • The bust is shorter.
  • She generally has narrower shoulders.
  • The length of the arms and legs are different…

Then, what does this mean for fashion brands?
Well, If they want the clothes they designed for the standard size (5'5) to perfectly fit a 5'3 person, fashion brands need to make another pattern and prototypes.
Nevertheless, most of the time, brands don’t do it for apparent budgetary reasons.

UNDER 5'3, FINDING CLOTHES THAT SUIT YOU BECOMES A REAL CHALLENGE.

In fashion, every inch counts, especially when you’re short.

First of all, the necklines are way too plunging. Even if they were not designed as a plunging neckline, they always end up looking that way because your bust is shorter. If you don’t like being stared at weirdly in the street or being told by colleagues that you are always wearing sexy tops or dress, it is not very practical. On top of that, plunging necklines are not the most flattering ones on petite body type.

Secondly, the sleeves are often too long, and the waistline is not always where it should be.

Thirdly, let’s talk about pants for a minute! Hemming pants becomes and habit when you are petite. Even before buying the pair of pants, you know you will have to bring it to the tailor or make good use of your sewing skills.

But, even if a tailor can do miracles, not all the clothes can be adjusted.
The work that needs to be done on a coat, for instance, to make it look good on a petite woman is so complex that it is almost like buying another one.

And if cutting the legs of the pants works from time to time, it is not always the case. Cutting 10 or 15 centimeters can completely change the shape of the pants!

You finally know all the reasons why we chose to specialize in Petite-friendly clothing. However, note that even if the person is taller than 5'3, our pieces may be adapted to the latter. If that person has narrow shoulders, a small bust or short legs, a petite-friendly garment can be a solution. The best way to find out is to try it out!
